Step 5: Iterations
The next step in our project was to start creating iterations for our version protest art. During my research I decided I wanted to work on protest art about miscarriage of justice and capital punishment.
- It is estimated that every 4 out of 100 inmates sentenced to the death penalty are innocent
- It is estimated that between 2.3 and 5 percent of all US prisoners are innocent, which could estimate as many as 120,000 people
Iterations-First Draft
For my first iteration I started creating posters that protested the death penalty. I played with image halftone and duotone to make the posters.
Iterations-Second Draft
For my second iterations I went back a few steps and did more research on typography and images. I found Vocal Type, a typography studio that designs type inspired by protest. I also started exploring the idea of breaking down the images using by using half-toning and repetition, and layered circles on the different images to show different different data regarding capital punishment.
Step 6: Book
Book-First Draft
The first version of my book was a combination of research, image making, and type exploration.
Final
For my final piece I decided to simplify my final project. I decided to focus on just capital punishment so the book itself could be a piece of protest art.
Last year I wrote a research paper about why I think capital punishment should be illegal. I started the book with the research paper, throughout the book I showed different statistics from the paper to show why capital punishment is so wrong. I used circles and duotone/halftone images to portray the data. In addition throughout the book I tell the stories of different men who were wrongfully executed, and show different arguments on why capital punishment should be illegal.
